A. Common noun suffixes
er is used for the person who does an activity , e.g , writer, worker , teacher,consumer ,. you
can use er with many verbs to make them into nouns.
Somethimes , the -er suffix is written as or , e.g: doctor , sailor, supervisor.
er/or are also used for things that do aparticular job, e.g pencil sharpener , computer , bottle
opener , projector.
er and ee can contrast with each other , er meaning "person who dose something " and ee "
person who receives or experiences the action " e.g employer/employee , sender /addressee ,
payee
tion / sion /ion are used to form nouns from verbs , e.g complication , population , reduction ,
donation.
ism ( an activity or ideology) and ist ( a person) are used for beliefs and idologies , and
sometimes profession ( compare with er/ or profession above) e.g liberalism , journalism ,
typist . physicist , terrorist.
ness is used to form noun from adjectives. Note what happens to adjectives that end in y:
goodness , laziness , adjective suffixes forgetfulness,

" can be done" e.g washable (can be washed)
